HOW TO PLAY
The setup is easy to handle. You place the wrestler ring in the middle of the table, arrange the discs in an already defined pattern, then each player takes a certain number of wrestling pieces and discs, depending on the player count.
On your turn, all you have to do is slide any piece from your inventory in a straight line on the sumo board (the wrestling ring) and try to push opposing beetle wrestler pieces out of the ring. Before or after your push, you may perform your wrestler’s signature move. Any standard discs that fall out of the ring as a result of your push are added to your inventory, but signature pieces return to the supply.
GAMEPLAY
The game has two different gameplay modes: the junior league, where the bugs are young and don’t have any special powers, and the professional league, where each contestant has a signature move or a special ability that he will use to dominate his adversaries.
The game is played in 2-4 players. In 4 players there will be 2 teams that will compete for the first place on the podium. We played the game in just 2 players and I think this is the best way to play Kabuto Sumo.
The game comes with 8 wrestlers, 5 of them also being simple variants to be played in the Junior league, having simpler rules. They are adequate to be played with kids.
The rulebook is small enough, just 4 pages, making it easy to learn and to be explained to others.
Each wrestler has a signature piece and an ability, for example Mighty Jaw Mike has a big wooden claw mandible and if you are able to “grab” other pieces with it, they will go straight in your inventory.
We have picked the wrestlers randomly at the start of the game, it was easier this way for us. The players will start with an equal number of pieces in their supply. The signature piece, unique for each bug, will go in the general supply. To gain your signature piece you will have to pay for it or to fulfill a specific condition requested on your wrestler card.
The general supply discs are 3 sizes: small, medium and large. Some wrestlers have abilities that will allow them to upgrade the size of the discs.
On your turn you will take one piece from your personal supply and push it on the board in a straight line. You must stop pushing when the piece completely passes the edge of the ring inside. By pushing your piece inside the ring you will push the other pieces already in the ring, your objective being to push your adversary over the edge, but also to gain new pieces in your personal supply. All the pieces, except the signature pieces, that will fall off the ring will be taken and put in your personal supply. Before or after this you can use your beetle signature move. This can be done just one time on your turn.
Players will take turns doing this until one of the two winning conditions is fulfilled.
There are 2 ways to win the game: if you push out of the ring the game piece representing the opposing player or if the opposing player has no pieces in their supply to push on the ring at the start of their turn. In our plays there were a lot of times when the winner was decided by the second win condition, so you must ensure that at the end of your turn you have at least one piece in your reserve.
The game plays quickly, you will get a lot of plays in a short time. Once it’s on the table, it will make you play game after game.
